Hello All,
I've been thinking of building a small greenhouse and was wondering if any members have any input on how to approach this. Obviously, I'm looking at costs and durability as the core components of a greenhouse. Any info would be great.

Michael,
Although it may be more gratifying to build a greenhouse, you may want to look into buying one. I have found a few at Harbor Freight Tools that are quite reasonable in price. (http://search.harborfreight.com/cpisearch/web/search.do?keyword=gre...)

Hope this is of some help!

Thanks for the post Byron. I am leaning towards a purchased greenhouse rather than a DIYer. Hopefully there are some at the Green House who have first-hand experience with building one to provide some additional info before I make a decision.

Happy Holidays.

Hi Michael,

I'm looking to build or buy a cold frame. I found these instructions online, http://www.doityourself.com/stry/oldwindowuses

First, I'm going to check craigslist and freecycle to see if anyone is getting rid of one. Then I have to measure the site and research endlessly on whether it's better to buy a prefab frame or to try to make it. Finally it will be spring and I won't need it.

I made a cold frame out of an old drawer with an old window on top. In fact, my little picture thingy is my cold frame in the spring, after my baby Quince came up!

No building or research needed. =)

Teri,
Currently, I have about 1/3 compost (from city compost site, its free), 1/3 mushroom soil, and 1/3 soil that I tilled at site of my raised bed/cold frame. Seems to work well for me, but be aware that some mushroom soil can "burn" young seedlings (or so I've heard). I've never had a problem with this so I can't tell you any more of that. To be safe, I always lay out my mushroom soil a couple of weeks before sowing/transplanting.
