Paper or Plastic?

I usually go with the paper. The sanitation dept in our city requests you put your recyclables in one. So it works out.

Thanks for all the info. Couple of quick questions and I apologize if you've answered these a hundred times already. 1. You mention keeping a 50/50 ratio of green/brown materials. I was mostly looki…

Thanks for the info. I'll definitley check with the city. And thanks for the rain water barrel idea, do you use one? I saw Ed Bagley use one on his show and was wondering how useful they are.

I recently attended a composting class put on by our county extension office. It was put on by folks from Texas A&M University. As a result they gave me a free composter. How cool is that? Anyhow, they have a great website that covers this topic.

Thanks nick! Sure enough the "worm compost" came back with a how to. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Your-Own-Worm-Compost-System I'm going to try the plastic bin one as I have several plastic bins with lids that I already own that can be used.

I just recently learned that this existed and I've been curious about it, too, though I've only ever heard it referred to as "worm composting". Instead of searching "vermiform composting" (2,010 hits on Google), try "worm composting" (286,000 hits o…

I too am currently looking into different ways to compost. I live in a apartment with NO landspace and have worked out a deal with a older friend who does have landspace to do a shared garden. I help with the heavy lifting and tending and she lets m…

No problem - we all love chatting about this stuff. GREEN-BROWN-AIR-WATER That's the ticket to composting. Too much green and it is mushy and too much brown and it is slower to decompose. Not enough air and it stinks (though still decomposes) and n…

I've heard/read different things about the difference between "green" and "brown" materials for compost. The way I understand it, the same part of a plant can be considered "green" or "brown" depending on when it gets added. For example, fresh cut g…

Green is the part of plant that had chlorophyll and brown is cellulose, stalks, twigs and wood. Paper can be used in the pile but don't choke the pile with it . Paper towels old news papers but recycling those would be better i think . You can add an…

Properly managed, a compost bin will not smell or likely be a haven for pests. There are a number of ways to construct a bin that will conceal it. Aerobic decomposition (that done by oxygen-loving microbes) is the kind that doesn't smell and can be…

Yea! Compost is fun. It's not that hard, or disgusting, and it really helps reduce waste and improve plants. There's several options to starting a compost bin. One being the bin it's self. I have a tumbler and a Nature Mill Composter, but you can j…
