I was having problems getting my lemon tree to do anything but shrink and shed leaves. It was actually smaller after 2 years than it was when I bought it. It looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree! A gardener came over to look at it for me and h…

Getting better

This gardening journey is so fun. And I am getting better. My sad little lemon tree is full of leaves and is growing a little. My orange tree is moving along nicely, the pomegranates look great. The huge hydrangeas that I got off Freecycle, ripped them from the ground (they are like 4 feet tall! That was fun to dig up and fit into my little Accent) are doing great. Hi Kathy--welcome to the group! Thanks for the comment on the pups. The little one is grown now, and we have three altogether. It's 20 degrees out this morning, so they're outside sitting on snowpiles and they're not coming in till I bribe them with treats. It's been a great winter for Samoyeds.

Hi Kathy--with regard to your question about raised beds, yes you should remove the grass from the footprint beneath the raised bed to optimize drainage and allow your plants to extend their roots deeper. If you purchase bagged or bulk garden soil, I would recommend amending it with compost or well-composted manure. Not too much, or you'll harm the plants. Try adding starter fertilizer to your planting holes, and then once you have the plants in place, scratch a little slow release fertilizer into the soil around your plants so that the roots will have nutrients when they spread. Hope this helps. --Paige
