I admit to being challenged when it comes to starting an avocado from the seed. I have tried, many times, but the only time I was successful was inadvertent. I threw the pit away in disgust after many weeks of watching it sit, not doing anything. I…

My family loves broccoli soup and I make it frequently, especially when I think our 4 year old hasn't been eating enough vegetables! We recently moved to Tokyo and I made the soup this past week and it turned out very sweet and unlike the broccoli…

Moved to Tokyo

We have recently moved to Tokyo. Even with the culture shock, adjusting to international city life from American suburbia, I still want to garden. Our apartment has a small terrace, but it is quite shady. I also have no idea where to purchase gardening supplies yet. I went to a big 100Y store in Harajuku that did have some plants and a few gardening supplies, but I wonder if that's the best way to start.

The grocery store near me has rotating vendors during the week - one sold plants, but since… Continue

Wow! Cool Pamela. I lived in Tokyo 30 years ago (weird, suddenly it was a long time ago), mostly in Koenji which is a few minutes west of Shinjuku on the Chuo-sen. We used to go dead west on the Chuo-sen to the terminus, about 50 minutes, to Mt. Takao. If you go there, first time walk up Mt. Takao of course, but though a terrific trip is apt to be crowded. Instead, you can just walk around the area and check out the small local farms nearby.

Also sounds like Hagiwara-san will be a good resource.

Not a vegetable garden of course, but I was always partial to the inner garden at Meiji Shrine. Every month it's different. Even in winter it's beautiful. It used to cost only 100 yen.

I envy you and would love to move back. Tokyo is terrific. My wife is Japanese and the kids are nearly grown, so we may get a chance to do it in a couple of years.
